ITS A NEW BREED- TEXAS REDS  Ill bet Knabe and Xbar would recommend breeding the females of that cross to this "Shorthorn" shown at around 8 months O0  (lol) <beer>    https://vimeo.com/203758138

Very little to nothing I like about that bull: Hes substantially higher across the hips than at the withers, he has the reverse wedge like a female, and, as a result, a very shallow chest floor.

Here's what a bull should look like: compare and contrast
So you want them deep chested, small boned, no hearted and shallow flanked?

And people wonder why shorthorns have a bad rap commercially. How in the hell do you see no heart? Deep chested is a good thing.
Ive never thought deep chested was a good thing. And if you can't see the rest of the traits that bull has then you need to reevaluate.

A more balanced female is difficult to imagine. Great one there, clearly makes a myth of the 'hard calving' Trump notion!

: And the tired unsubstantiated crap about crossbreeding, and mongrels -she will make 2 of any of the frail dairy looking "pure" cattle. "AS IF" that cows calves wont produce-just like  the tens of thousands of commercial cattle that have more performance and require half the intake of the so-called pure cattle (to the uniinitiated and or JR Varsity breeders who dont know the real stories behind some of the breeding.. This is how you PROVE your breed of cattle and get people other than some little coffe clatch pet cow club members to use them. O0

I do not think that it hurts to keep different pools of germ plasma around so that the industry can adapt to changing enviromental and economical situations. But it cracks me up when the ivory tower Shorthorn breeders look down on the beef industry in general when their product is not deemed beneficial to anyone.

Yup-and the focus of the largest group of breeders (commercial cattle "breeders") has been JUST THAT-as far as different plasma and crossbreeding go.. With no proof of hybrid vigor or usefulness (which they really are usefull -just breed one to another breed and see the improvement )- The ivory tower cattle are being buried even further-if that's possible. Sue.......we have varying %'s from three quarter to 1 quarter........mostly around the 50%. I almost like the half blood and less the best.

Until you stabilize those percentages, you won't know which is best.  You can't just breed a 3/4 Shorthorn 1/4 Brahman to a half blood shorthorn/brahman and call it a Santa Gertrudis.  It just doesn't work like that.

Xbar, ever thought about letting other people do what they want with THERE OWN cattle. Maby stop trolling on here and do something productive. I have seen very few if any positive posts from you in the last few years.

WEVE SEEN A TON OF EXAMPLES OF GOOD CROSSBRED CATTLE WITH VERY GOOD CALVES ON HERE-OF VARYING PERCENTAGES-YOUD BETTER HAVE SOME VERY GOOD CATTLE TO SHOW YOUR END OF THINGS AND TO DISPROVE THE OBVIOUS RESULTS IN THE FLESH-NOT THEORETICAL EXAMPLES -AND HEY SUE COULD YOU POST A PICTURE OR TWO OF THOSE TERRIBLE COMPOSITES IVE SEEN OF YOURS? In your opinion, there is no merit distinction between a first generation 3/8 5/8 Shorthorn brahman composite and a Santa Gertrudis, whose genotype has been stabilized at 3/8, 5/8ths?

I dont raise Santas and this thread isnt geared towards them other than the generalities of various percentages of crosses for PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY RAISE AND DEVELOP X BRED or COMPOSITE CATTLE-So-if a breeder is happy with one of 10000 variations of bovines including 60% on a 39% cross of 2 breeds--than that is that breeders PEROGATIVE-and generally their customers are happy if they come back for more-so I guess the question is -WHAT ARE YOU HAPPY WITH? And do you have any x breds to show us? And can you prove by DNA that your cattle are pure Shorthorn?I THINK NOT-I remember a red horned bull you pictured that maybe went back to JT Ranch and or Byland Dazzler-I know at least where Deertrail Awesome came from and saw him in the fields for 4 years-and Enticer Awesomes sire  is another story-So if any of your cattle are related to that bull-as good as they probably are-you are in the same boat as AJ and the famous carrier debacle-he had alot of fun with that-and that was a dam good animal-All he had to do was breed him to clean females and keep the clean calves-maybe all of them O0

x bar has a point. If one had enough pastures and bulls it would be best. BUT you can take a Shorthorn cow and breed her to the same Red Angus bull......say 5 times and there will be variations in the cattle of maybe 5 types. And another point.......start a new say Sante Getrudis herd....correction......start two programs. In one program use Sullivan Shorthorns for your shorties and Loving Shorthorn's as a source of your Shorties. You have two vastly different kind of cattle. So I would argue that if you select and cull and breed within close to half bloods it would be essentially the same as 3 eights-5 eights wat ever. The key is selection and culling......I would argue.
