Am amazed daily how little those in the city know about animals.  My daughter is a little over 2 years old, and knows quite a bit about cattle.  We were at a party last night and she was explaining the difference between bulls and cows to one of the ladies there.  She used a term that the lady thought maybe was inappropriate for her to know.  It made me laugh, while the lady, who is a close friend and is very nice, just shook her head.  It got me to thinking though, is it bad if my 2 year old can pick a bull out of a pen of cows, knows why a steer is a steer, can name all the cattle colors as well as some breeds, and can pick a motley face out of a cattle pot full calves?  Also, she is learning how to AI, must help muck the horse pens, and learned some possibly inappropriate things to call cattle while helping Dad load.

I love it.  They pick up on so much.    When my oldest daughter was around that age, she told us how to tell the bulls apart from the cows.  The bulls have purses.  Hmm... yes they do!!

I think it is great.

We always told my then 4 yrs old daughter to stay away from the mares that were in for service to our stud, as they are crabby when they are in heat.....so one day my mother-in-law was ragging on me for something and Kylee looks up at her and goes..."Grandma must be in heat!"  I could not stop laughing!

Sounds like our house and you should hear the conversations now that the girls are 13, 16 and 20!  My favorite all time story is when we had just started with the cattle and our oldest was about 4.  We were cutting bull calves.  She watched, asked what we were doing and I explained.  Again a long pause.... then she said "When you and Daddy are done having babies are you going to cut him like that?"
Of course, I was on the ground laughing but my husband and father in-law didn't think it was all that funny!
Then when we were out a fair, a "city" woman asked our youngest what was going to happen to her sister's steer after the fair?  Youngest child at 5... was straight forward and said Well, we're gonna cut his head off and he'll be dinner.  I thought the city woman was gonna faint!
Farm kids are the best kids!  They understand real life, have more responsibility than many other kids their age and are learning that life is as good as you make it!

Just an add on to Bovine and Equine's post -- I as well am just laughing my tail off, and to tell you the truth -- that Gramma in heat deal may not be all that far off, and if it is true -- MY mother in law is not only perpetually in heat -- but must be CYSTIC as well !!  I'll tell you -- if we were not 300 miles from her I think I'd go nuts!!!

Great post n the kids --them being so frank  is so much fun, shows how much farther ahead in life our country kids really are!!!

Good job every one !  (clapping) (clapping)

Several years ago a friend of mines son who was used to being with his Dad every step of the day had to start kindergarten, and it really crimped his style, because he thought he had WORK to do instead of school......

Well, right before Christmas break his kindergarten teacher announced that she was getting MARRIED over the time off.......one little girl who really didn't know what she was saying asked her if she was "GONNA HAVE A BABY?"............

When without missing a beat, Ryan yells out....."SHE'S GOTTA GET BRED FIRST!"....... (clapping) (clapping)

When our one and only daughter was 3, almost 4 she saw her first calf born.  When she asked how the calf had gotten in the cows bottom I told her to remember when daddy was using the big silver tank.  She remembered him breeding the cows and you could just see the wheels turning.  All of the sudden she got this look on her face and said "Then how did Leigh Ann's baby get in her belly?"  Leigh Ann is my cousin.  Needless to say I told her Daddy had nothing to do with that one but she could ask Leigh Ann next time she saw her!

A couple of months later we were castrating calves and the neighbor walked in the barn and asked Caitlin what she was doing.  Without a beat Caitlin told her that she was working the gate so mommy could cut the baby calves testicles out of their bellies, then turned and yelled out the back of the barn "come on Daddy, send another one with some nuts in!".

She is 11 now but we like to bring it up when she gets exasperated with the things her younger cousins say!
