I have recently purchased extra acreage a few miles away from where i am living. I want to put some cattle on that piece of land, and my brother asked me what I am going to do about cattle theft. He got me thinking, how often do people steal cattle off of your land? And what are a few suggestions and steps that i can take to prevent this from even happening. I just started with cattle  a few months ago, and this will be my first herd away from where I live. I would appreciate any help or advise I can find.

Put up sign beware of bull! Years ago some cattle were stolen I think at Louisville right out of the tie outs. The bull Hostage was stolen right out of the pasture but later recoverd.Cameras seem to help solve several thefts.

First, where are you located? There are no cattle stolen here. Most people around here are scared of cattle.

Second, don't have any corrals in this new pasture, that just makes it easier to pen and load the cattle. Also add locks and heavy chain on the entrances.

Third, daily checks to keep an eye on things, making sure nothing is out of sorts. Read a story once where a cattle thief daily set up pieces of a corral until the whole thing was set up. Owner never checked on the cattle so he never saw it. And the cattle were stolen just like that.

I am located in the Nashville TN area. We haven't heard much of that kind of thing happening here, more east of us close to the Virginia border a friend of mine had a neighbor who's cattle got taken, but the thief was caught the next night trying to steal a couple of sheep. The property is close enough to me where I can swing by there everyday and I've met the neighbors, they seem like nice people as they came out to ask me what I was doing there when I looked at the land before buying it. They said they didn't recognize my truck therefore both of them felt the need to see who I was, so I guess that's a good sign already. I would also assume it's a good idea to alert any stockyards or auctions about any cattle stolen would be a good idea as well? Thank you for the help

Freeze Brand.  Easy to do and a big deterrent to the pro cattle thieves. Also, neighbors won't just put them in theirs if they get out with no ear tags.  We had a neighbor at a summer pasture that never fixed a fence and never put in an ear tag.  When they got in with ours he would come over and drive anything back that didn't have an ear tag.  Always a mess and he was mad at us when we came looking for cattle.

I was thinking about freeze branding. It is something different and it looks pretty cool as well.

My old lady bought me a freeze brand recently. I’m excited to try it out.
