What may have happened is just that it was one of his first shows and like young people now, its all about the selfie, college humor and not adjusting to an audience unless faced with pushback. He probably now knows he made a mistake.

This is my first post on steerplanet as I've heard that someone has a problem with Jeremy Ruble as a judge. I'd like to start off by saying that I am the beef superintendent for the fair where this show took place. I have nobody showing in this show and am completely unbiased as to how the results of the show take place. We put on a small county fair show of about 100 beef animals.
I selected Jeremy as the judge for our county fair as he is a professional in the beef industry. (generally what we look for in any of our judges) He did an excellent job talking with all the kids and placing animals. As with every show I have ever been to, not everyone will agree with how the judge places each class. As an observer I could tell he was after a certain type of animals (mainstream for the industry) and was consistent in how he placed classes. One thing came into question during junior showmanship. Jeremy talked to each kid during junior showmanship and used an arbitrary question to sort the class which happened to be a college of choice. After the whole show was over, I asked him why he sorted junior showmanship the way he did, and it came down to most of the kids didn't know enough about their calves in the ring for him to sort them based on any questions that he asked. The 2 showman that had done the best both happened to like the same college. Looking back on it now I think we would all agree that there would have been a better way to sort the class.
As for the original poster of this thread- I would be more than happy to sit down with you and listen to your concerns of what happened at this show. You are also welcome to come to our next fair board meeting and address it there.
The integrity of the Ruble family should not come into question here. Jeremy did an excellent job and is under consideration to come back to our fair in 2015 (those decisions are made in December). I think he will agree that he made a mistake on the way he sorted the jr showmanship class. To define someone's career by one questionable mistake that took place in one class at a county fair is crazy.
I will follow this thread and try to address any questions that anyone has.

I am not from Iowa.

I do not know what county or fair that you represent.

I do not know the judge that you selected.

I do not know how competitive your county is (although I am guessing it is no walk in the park).

I do not know the member that started this post.

Now that we have established the fact that I do not know much, I am going to tell you what I DO know.

I know that you have a very difficult job.

I know that you are likely very under paid to do this difficult job.

I know that there is likely not a compensatory figure that would make your job less difficult.

I know that I have done a substantial amount of volunteer work over the past 15 years, and a great deal of it involved kids and families in an environment in which there would be no way to please everyone.

I know that I have nothing but respect for you becoming a member of this site to openly address this issue.  That takes a great deal of integrity and courage to do what you have done...after reading all of the posts.

I know that there is less than a 10% chance that anyone will approach you on a face to face level regarding your open invitation to discuss any events of your show.

I know that I hope you will stay an active member of this site, and give us your input anytime that you feel you can add something.  Your perspective will be greatly appreciated by me and many others here.

Thank You

Back to the original point.....if the 4-H kids in the ring were discounted in any way because of the answer they gave to the collegiate choice that judge should be penalized. Not to mention how unprofessional it is to use a cell phone in the ring.

Just like any other job he (the judge) is paid to be there (in most cases, if not he has dedicated his volunteer time) and to judge the cattle show as he sees fit that day. Just like most other jobs, being on your phone and taking selfies is not aloud.

Although, it is the judge's day and he may place the cattle as he sees fit. As long as he is judging cattle and not the child's college choice.

I am glad you brought the cell phone usage up which I did not address in my last post. The usage of this during the show was mostly my fault as I did not provide him with a copy of our county rules for the show when he arrived. However, we did email him a copy of the rules earlier and he was using his resources (cell phone) to look at them. (our rules state only animals with a minimum gain can advance) He only used his phone in a professional manner during the show to look at the rules- he never took any calls or had it out while judging a class.
