Nate - if crop insurance was not subsidized its cost would obviously go up. 

reaaaaaaaaally.  does that factor in the amount of subsidy as well as the infrastructure and personnel to manage it?

subsidies only hide costs, defer it, reduce competition, raise costs, increase paperwork, picks winners and losers, gives greater benefits to "minorities".

all these things and others, drives up the cost and drives out competition./// WHAT COMPETITION? We havent been competitive for years-against countries like Argentina-and even Canada-US makes it in volume:and the ability to continue as such-and if the crops stop flowing at predetermined rates to the right orgs. to whom we owe $-Katy bar the door-mayve thats one aspect of the "COMPLICATED" farm bill. Like Canadian Income taxes introduced in 1917 by the wartime government.  Imposed as a "temporary" income tax to cover expenses. "Despite the new tax the Canadian government ran up considerable debts during the war and were unable to forego income tax revenue after the war ended. With the election of the Liberal government of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King, much of the National Policy was dismantled and income tax has remained in place ever since."

Hamburman - to be as brief as possible...it would make it much more difficult for the federal government to live beyond its means and make it more likely that they would only do what is Constitutionally permittable.  I don't pretend that it would solve our problems overnight...it wouldn't.  Not by a long shot.  I am saying that is why we are in this mess. 

The only reason that the Federal government is as big and bloated as it is because of the ability to print money via the Federal Reserve.  Under a gold standard, the federal government would only be able to print more dollars if their gold holdings is increased.

Eggbert enlighten me on how being on the gold standard would solve our problems.

If you believe that the federal government needs to cut spending then it has to be in the farm bill too. It is full of useless fat that most farmers don't get to see anyway. Majority of government money makes it to the hands of the rich in this fat corrupted system. Cut it all, balance the budget, pay down our debt and start over. Why are farmers paid not to raise crops on land that is not suitable for crops anyway ??? And while we are cutting get the EPA reeled in before they kill American agriculture. That is what you get for taking government money, when you take their money they think they can regulate you to death. If you don't let them regulate you then they start taking away your money that you got use to  and weak greedy  people start caving in. JMO
