    1A vs.1B in Red Angus

1A or 1B?  This debate has been going on for at least 25 years.  Way back when there was no DNA testing available a calf would be placed as 1B if it was the product of a multiple sire pasture even if all bulls in the pasture were 1A.  Some RA puritans insist that only 1A reds are worth having --...

    angus registration question

Red calves resulting from parents registered in the Angus Assoc can be registered as 1A (100%) Red Angus if there are no other "color" restrictions such as black pigment around the eyes & anus.  If these are present the calf will be charted as a Catagory II and their progeny which meet the color...

    wernacres off road shorthorn bull

Be wary of the birthweights.  I really liked the look of the bull and the advertised 77 lb birth weight so I used him on 2 of our Durham Red heifers.  Got absolutely fantastic bull calves but they weighed in at 100 & 98!  I will probably use him again, judging by the calves produced, but NOT on...

    The "Red" Challenge

Me too!  As I said when she left us "she made people feel good about themselves".

    First Calf

You may be too old to show junior, but take it from me if you can still walk you're never to old to show!  A number of shows are now offering AOB (all other breeds) or AORB (all other registered breeds) shows and we're enjoying showing our Durham Reds in these classes.  Our cattle & grandkids...

What are everone's opinions on this?

Just a comment on the "true" rewards of working hard with what you have...last year my grandson picked out his own heifer (a daughter of a cow he had shown years ago), worked with her constantly & loved every minute.  At the show all the other heifer class exhibitors stood out in the hot sun...

    Long on heifer calves

Last year we had a run on heifers too.  They're nice to have but our bull sales support the herd!  At the rate our bulls are leaving I may have to actually go out & buy one...  Hope our girls pump out a bigger ratio of bull calves this year!

    Winning at any Cost?

I raise beef for the love of it, but I show to raise good kids. I love that!  Our family has learned how to graciously stand at the end of the line in too many shows because the kids have been taught to play by the rules no matter what anyone else does.  Surprisingly, our herd does support...

    Big Calves

Not trying to be a thorn, but did anyone ever think of doing a pelvic measurement on the heifers before deciding what to breed them to?  The BIF has a great formula that's pretty darn accurate as to what size calf a heifer can deliver without dystocia  -- and I do agree that shape of the head &...

    Marble bone in black Angus

Thanks DL for keeping us up to date on these genetic defects.  I also spent many hours tracing pedigrees on my herd & was dimayed that he appeared in most all of my lineages so I went ahead & had all of my herd sires tested.  I'm hoping others will do the same.

    Clipping

Ok all of you folks with WAY more experience than me (which includes anybody who has ever turned on a clipper)...I've heard different opinions & need your advice.  If you are trying to make a neck look longer & cleaner do you leave the hair the same length as the neck all the way to the inner...

    Same principles apply?

The ring in the halter worked wonders for us too.  I'm considerably older than most of you & don't have the strength to pull the calf when it doesn't want to move so I use the "tug tug" theory -- give a couple of tugs & as soon as he/she takes a step I let off the line tension & praise the...

    What am I missing here????

Gave up going to them years ago because of it -- at the red angus national shows it was EXTREMELY  important to the judges who the sire of the calf was!  I won't even get into what I think of using EPDs in a show...

Ideas on rehabilatating a crazy cow

Been there, done that!  We just hauled off 2 bred registered yrlg hfrs & a 10 mo old reg hfr to the sale barn.  Brought em in to winter pasture & they tried to jump 6 foot pipe fence in the pens.  Looked up their pedigrees & sure enough, their dams got shipped last year same reason.  Also have...

    Good Luck at Denver

Good luck to all of you going to NWSS.  I must admit that I lived there for 5 years & really don't care if I never see Denver again!  Have fun & do well.

    Pumping websites

Pumping for administration of electrolytes, etc. for animal health reasons is acceptable.  Pumping for ARTIFICIAL FILL at a show is not -- it is specifically banned at most shows as being unethical fitting.

    Nurse Mate ASAP for Calves

Sounds like it certainly wouldn't hurt them.  For years we have used a product called nutri-drench on calves that look like they could use a boost.  It's a liquid vitamin with propylene glycol & is absorbed within 15 minutes.  May not be for everyone, but it's sure worked for us.

    Too old to Castrate?

We usually don't cut our bulls until after weaning so we can look at the performance data, & some have been well over 600 lbs.  We've never had a problem with them even at these weights.
