Always be humble and kind/NC or not?

Maybe the song writer will allow us to borrow the suggestion that in 2017 we "always be humble and kind" on steerplanet.  Lately the discussion has been civil, but I have not read all the topics.  If we disagree, that is not a problem, and, yet, let's observe the common courtesies.  Everyone...

    Philosophies of Breeding

In the original post there was discussion about composites.  I wonder if we can learn from the dog breeders.  A researcher in Berkeley crossed a border collie with a Newfoundland.  The resulting pups all crouched and glared like the collie and loved water like the Newfoundland; the barking was...

    Philosophies of Breeding

Some of you noted the difference in the size between the X and Y chromosomes.  I don't mean to hijack the thread, but the mother of 3 sons who all graduated at the top of their class referred us to this article. Heredity Theory Says in Males, Intelligence Comes From Mom...

    Philosophies of Breeding

others have this theory. to me, it's why people should take different backgrounds that share the same desired traits and cross them.  it won't necessarily guarantee more "reinforcement" at more places on the genome, but it's probably worth it to do so in the absence of any worthwhile...

    Philosophies of Breeding

Knabe, Some of the great ones (sired hundreds of calves) might include JSF Gauge and Sull Red Reward.  From the past surely HS Rodeo Drive would be an example.  I'm more of an applied science type and wonder what a low COI would be?  For instance, is Free K-Kim Hot Commodity still low COI at...

    Philosophies of Breeding

It is worth noting the Shorthorn breeders that use linebreeding or inbreeding--let's not get hung up on the definitions.  A couple of breeders whose cattle consistently have higher percentage COI than most are Saskvalley and KL (Keith Lauer).  Probably Waukaru, Loving, Kaper, and others could be...

    California Shorthorn, 1910-1920

This is great art and falls in the time frame when my family began registering Shorthorns.  Our family fed cattle and liked the doing ability of Shorthorns.  The roan might be a lot like the good, big Shorthorn cows like Grandpa had.

    Cates sale

Thanks.  Do you know who bought lot 25?  She looks like she has a lot of potential.

Where to send Shorthorn purple top tubes?

Why not call ASA tomorrow?  They will send blood cards to you free of charge.  I looked up the pdf on ASA website and you can do that as well.  The recent protocol is to send blood card to ASA, and they send it on to Neogen/Geneseek/Igenity.  Maybe ASA will instruct you about transferring blood...

    Double leader daughter

Is that Ka'ba Double Leader or another?  Her calf is impressive.

Waukaru Forward appealed to me, so I took a look at his EPD profile and pedigree.  His EPD's are about as positive as you will find.  His pedigree is full of cow-makers.  You must have done your homework?

Our new Shorthorn Herd Sire JTM Spartan 517E

I like him.  More people need to raise their own herd bulls.  I expect he moves well and is out breeding cows at a young age.  What kind of grass is that?  It looks lush, but his pedigree and EPD's would predict that he can work on grass as a yearling and get the job done.  Where I come from...

    New Herdsire

Do you expect his semen to be available in the USA?  Collecting him is important, because not many bulls fill certain needs as well as Robert.  I waited too long to sample Bonanza, and this may be the right son.

Shorthorn sire test and progeny test at Univ of Ill.

See pg. 10 in May/June Shorthorn Country for a full page about the ASA Sire Test Program.  In the previous one we had Weston Surprise 3rd with calves weaned at Burke Johnson's in Wyoming, as I recall.  I went to the harvest of the cattle in OK, as I recall.  Pete Swaffer was breed secretary...

    Shorthorn weaning weights.

If memory serves, Dad used to talk about wedge shape in dairy cattle, although we had only a few nurse cows way back when. Maybe the dairy cow was supposed to have a wedge when viewed from the side, getting deeper toward the rear of the cow.  Dairy bulls may be the opposite with their side-view...

    Oakview General 507Z

It all boils down to whether you like or want to breed show cattle.  A major judge (not a Shorthorn person) said that many of the Trump females are among the best of any breed.  Like politics, some love Trump and others, not so much.  The show ring gravitates toward cattle with long fronts...

Question: Where can I have testing done for TH and PHA?

With the advantage of having genetic status printed on their pedigree when tested through ASA, we are going that route now, and that may be the best way for registered Shorthorns.  Since Dr. Beever developed the TH and PHA tests, going directly to him may be as good as any for an animal not...

    Indianapolis

Indy should be where the action is this week and coming weekend.  There are a few weekends each year that people do not schedule weddings in Indianapolis.  This is one of them.  National FFA Convention is another.  Are there others?
