Best April fool's joke played or gotten?

Take this however you want:  Today is our 8th wedding anniversary!  At least it is an easy date for my husband to remember.

Dropped foot in a newborn-any suggestions?

The calf seems to be better this morning.  He was at least able to place the hoof down when he was standing still so hopefully he will continue to improve without splinting.    I will thin the bedding in the pen to make it easier to get around.  He did get a Bo-Se shot within the first 24...

Dropped foot in a newborn-any suggestions?

We have a 3 day old calf that has had a bumpy start when his mother prolapsed.  He was a very large calf for the size of his mother but was delivered when we arrived. After two days of not being able to stand without assistance, this morning he was up and nursing on his own.  That made my...

    Prolapse- chance of happening again?

It has been a tough couple of days in my little cattle operation.  Had fits getting a calf to nurse earlier this week and then I was one with the prolapsed heifer last night.  This I know from the last three days:  1.  Having the ability to pick up the phone and call someone like Red or...

    ag survey

I had the delight of filling out this dandy little document last night.  As I whined and uttered an occasional expletive as I pulled files and calculated numbers, my husband observed that certainly a clever attorney could figure out how not to answer this document.  I explained that while he is...

    Holiday Classic?

I enjoyed the sale, cattle and the company (Woody and his handler, Red)  and  there were a couple of good buys.  Thought the embryo prices were down slightly over my recollections of past years.  Also thought there were fewer cattle in the 5k to 10 k range but that again is not scientific, just...

    Calving Camera

We do have the system and love it.  While we didn't have it up for calving, I did use it check for heats which worked well.  While I am looking forward to being able to flip on the TV in the middle of the night to check the calving pen, I am also looking forward to being able to check in during...

    Lima Show

I agree.  From my perspective, it was very well run and the organizers should be commended.  I liked the two rings in one day program particularly since we only had heifers.  Showmanship also moved along very well.  While certainly not necessary, the only change I might like is a little more...

    Louisville maine show

Red is still in soggy and muddy Louisville but I had the great fun of showing her two heifers.  Didn't place as well as was hoped but I will hasten to add that doesn't mean it wasn't a successful trip.  I had a great time looking at some of the best cattle I have ever seen, spending time with...

    Red

Red, since I bought one of those heifers, do I get some visitation rights??? He is a cutie and I am looking forward to the Killer Kitty adjustment stories.

    Weaning

Yep.  Something like that. I first spotted them in the PBS Supply catalog.

    Weaning

I was looking at what appear to be plastic devices placed in the nostrils.  I am already dealing with a family of vegetarians that lives next to the front pasture!  I can imagine what will happen if anything midevil looking were to show up!

    Weaning

Does anyone recommend the devices designed to prevent the calves from nursing but allowing them to technically remain with their mothers?  Our new barn is about a mile closer to us so I am interested in noise reductions!

    AI breeding question?

Ok, I will sheepishly ask, why the GnRH on the second AI?  Red, as you know, I had the same thing last week when we bred on a cow on Saturday and the cow, AKA:  Paris Hilton just released from jail, was in a complete heat jumpin' frenzy four days later.

    Success with Lutalyse?

Thanks for the input everyone.  Two goals/reasons for the Lute.  I have not observed heat in three cows that calved over six weeks ago.  The vet recommended trying Lute to see if that might "jump start" them as he said before he pays a farm visit.  The other goal with the Lute was to work on...

    Success with Lutalyse?

In the past few weeks, I  have administered a total of 9 doses of Lute to a combination of heifers, open cows and nursing cows.  So far, I have had exactly two cycle for me-one heifer and one open cow.  Externally, they all appear in good health and have Crystalix Brigade lick tubs.  Might I...

    Packing up the Showbox

Red- You are forgetting my nephew's favorite peanut butter bars.  My nephew liked Red's peanut butter bars so much, I had to get her recipe and make them for the shows Red doesn't make! Oh, and don't forget the universal key for the showbox lock.  AKA-bolt cutters.
