    Harsh water on hair

Good question. I’ve never actually thought about it with cattle but I know that hard water makes human hair dry out.

    Angus Herd Sire Progression

Now there’s a good looking bull! I liked the pictures from a few years back but he keeps getting better with age.

weather influence on calf birth weights

Interesting post. I certainly think that a colder climate adds birthweight. I live in Saskatchewan and the farm I work for owns a few American bulls. As a rule of thumb when we’re using one we take the birthweight plus 10 pounds and that’s what we expect our calves to average. I’m not at all...

    Clipping Slick, and Shedding Questions

I would agree with slicking her out if your show wasn’t less than a month away. It’s a little late to do that now. Depending on when your most important shows are you could do it after this one. Otherwise just keep on her with as much combing and brushing as you can. Rinsing will help stimulate...

    Steel Livestock Trailers

I bought a 24’ Delta trailer in 2012 and I love it! It seems to be really well built, pulls nicer than the 24’ aluminum Wilson that my boss owns and the dealer I went through allowed me to customize it so I could have exactly what I wanted. My only complaints would be that a few of the rivets on...

Looks like a pretty stout & shaggy heifer!

    Stubborn steer! Hhheeelllppp!!!!

I watched the video and all I saw was a really good way to get hurt. Unless that guy plans to show his heifer with a barrel in between her and him I don't see how he's made any progress at all considering that the heifer is still trying to eat him at the end of the video. Looking4champions...

    Thoughts on 4h heifer

I think you have a nice solid heifer to work with. You'll need to work on setting her up properly so she looks her best (with her back legs scissored and her head higher). Keep rinsing her regularly because her hair is still in need of training. She could also use a bit more condition before...

Sullivan's Pink Oil vs Lusters Pink Sheen Spray

I've used both and I much prefer Luster's. It's a lot lighter and the can doesn't spray as aggressively so it's a lot harder to apply too much product. I don't use it daily but in the winter I'll use it about every second day because it helps to relax the curls and waves that we're often...

Hereford heifer what u think ?

I think you've done a really good job developing your heifer. Thanks for thinking of me Mark! Is she bred yet? Lately we haven't been doing enough AI'ing for me to reccomend a specific bull but aside from being heifer safe you'll want something that'll add some belly and fleshing ability. Some...

    Smokey heifer calves

Good thing they have tags or you'd have a hell of a time telling those three apart! Nice calves, very consistent.

Help!!!! Newborn calf with white muscle disease!

I agree with cflem. We treat newborn calves with a 5cc dose the first time they display the symptoms and then 2cc a day for about a week. After that we watch them closely and treat as needed. With your calf being older I'd probably double that. If it is a thiamine deficiency the calf will bounce...

    Newborn calf acting weird

I'm no vet but I'd put money on it being a thiamine (vitamin b1) deficiency. We have had two calves at the farm I'm working at like that this year. We treated the calves with 5cc of thiamine as well as vitamin A, D & E and selenium as soon as we saw the symptoms and then 2cc of thiamine everyday...

    For my fellow Hereford fans!

Thanks Mark, the older sister really surprised me with how deep she got and hopefully the little one will too. I think the younger one will be a little more complete with a bit more frame and bone- I intend to keep them both so I'll get to see how they mature. Mark H- I personally haven't used...

    For my fellow Hereford fans!

I don't have any new pictures of this heifer so I figured I'd update this post with a picture of her 2017 born maternal sister. She's pictured here at 2.5 weeks old. I think this one could be even better than the first.

    Calf Growth! I need help!!

It sounds like you mean he has a high tailhead and/or weak top. If so, you can't actually feed or do anything that will change it but you can clip him and set him up differently to try hide it a little. If you post a picture we could give you more specific advice.

    Hill Haven Fire Storm 28C

The Hereford and Shorthorn shows run at the same time at Agribition so I happened to catch the Champion bull class. Myself and the girl I was watching it with had Fire Storm picked as our champion hands down. The calves that ended up winning were nice and I don't mean any disrespect to their...
