New hereford bull calf. What are your thoughts on his progress?

In my experience sometimes herfs will darken up as they get older and lose the calf fuzz. I know my calves right now are darker than when they were weaned. He looks nice and is doing very well for you

new shorty herd sire opinions welcome

He's pretty but bulls are to be masculine. He looks like a show heifer. That would be my hang up on him. Hopefully he produces the way you want him to.

    steers losing weight

Have they grown in height? I have learned that they seem to lose a little bit of their belly and that fat look when they grow up and then they regain it. It makes them look like they are losing but they are really just growing.

    running fans during the winter

If I have cattle tied up in the barn I always kick a fan on to help circulate the air. Especially if they are super hairy they can sweat some. I had a heifer last year that did sweat without a fan. Just depends on the set up. My old barn was fully insulated and when cattle got in there it could...

    2014 prospect bulls

Seeing those pics on fb today I am not impressed without the clip job and fluff. They seem awfully small and structure is not what I thought they would be.

When should we wean a prospect?

If you haven't started creep make sure you start that before weaning cold turkey. We also do daytime weaning that works pretty well where the calf is in the barn and on feed during the day and out with the cow at night. We usually do this for a month before we completely wean.

3days before show and steer has runny/loose stool what works best?

Sulfur boule or two depending on size and give them some grass hay instead of a feeding. It worked for us a few years ago when at KC with a heifer.

    Finding Recip herds

We used a herd in Iowa where we are from. That is all that the guy does. You take him the embryos and he gets them in using the person of your choice. It was $60 per embryo to put them in then $150 per embryo settled. Then $1250 to pick up the calf at weaning. The guy calves them out and takes...

    Respiratory Problem???

Is it warm where you are at? Is it a pant like she is hot? Is she fat and hairy? If you have doubts always consult your vet. Respiratory issues can cause other problems if not taken care of but it sounds like she's hot.

    Hereford Bull calf

Opinions on this guy? Would really like for him to be bigger but his recip didn't do much for him. He's really gaining now that he's home and on feed. About Time son a flush mate to the other bull I have had on here.

"Slow and Steady" or "Show him who's boss"?

I have done what your friend suggested on a couple and it has worked well for me. Like Knabe said tho make sure it's a battle you can win. Usually a day or two and they seem to realize your not going to hurt them especially since your bringing them feed and water.

What should I have in my Cattle First Aid kit?

As another horse person that crossed over to cattle years ago here's a few things I have learned. Observe your cattle you can pick up on a ton of things and stop a lot in its tracks. It has seemed like thru the years we have had the least amount of problems with our show cattle and the most with...

    Fitting/clipping jobs

Iowa has had that rule at state fair for the junior shows as long as I can remember. People seem to know who is your family and who isn't and most times it's someone from your county that complains first. I had a friend showing a heifer for us a few years ago and actually had someone come to me...

    My steer as warts

I had a bull that broke like crazy with them this fall. It has taken time but I cut half of them off and the other half has finally fell off. Our vet said that is still the best way. It releases the virus so the body will fight it off. He said that the vaccination only works for the specific strain.
