Bulls that sired the "meanest" calves

I agree with a lot of these stories from the 80's Chi Bulls.  Sugar Ray Ildeno Yuma I don't know how the attitude of cattle today compares to those cattle because I was so much younger back then.  The other thing is that I was clipping cattle all over the country, and when that is all you are...

Our upcoming last year UPDATED PICS July 12, 2017

Last week in Denver marked the first show of my kids' final year showing.  I have twin boys that have time left but are young for their graduating class and will be off in college this August. This one is a Monopoly X HooDoo steer. I will share pictures of the other 2 steers when I get the...

    40 Days out of show..(PICTURES)

First off, that is a nice County Fair steer.  Really nice. What your son has there is a show steer minus 2" of hair.  If you can get his hair growing, he is going to look much better than he does now. Feed him!  Give him what you have been feeding him, except up the Show Chow to absolutely as...

Updated - Daily Hair Care Products

Man, I hear you on the cost of the Show Coat.  I am sure that there is a lot of cost involved with making the stuff. I broke down and tried it last summer.  Again, it is expensive......but I have never seen anything like it.  Understand, we know how to grow hair.  However, this was a bad haired...

    How much is too much?

My philosophy follows the last part of VC's post. I get your question, but it is pretty rare that we actually WANT one to gain 3+ pounds per day.  The management part is the trick. If we can get them to gain 2.0 to 2.5 per day, that is where we want to be.

    Weight Gain

I understand the different opinions regarding how much heat is in the ration.  Maybe there could be a little more energy in there, but I don't think it is really too far off.  41% rolled corn 24% Soybean Meal and Hulls Maybe not perfect on the fat and heat, but not too bad. My first question...

    2017 Denver Display Bulls

I wonder if Wade is maybe about to the point that he doesn't NEED to display bulls in Denver anymore.  Here I Am Hi Ho Silver Fu Man Chu Lone Ranger All new bulls, all siring loads of high end show steers.  Plus all of the old ones that still work! Cost a lot of money to go to Denver, and...

holding a 1300 pound steer for march

What is the format of the Fat show he is going to in March? Is there a weigh back? Do you weigh them in or do you just turn in a weight card and then have to weigh back within 5% of that? Hair or Slick show? I have seen steers show at 1360-1375.  With a 5% weigh back, that puts you at a...

    American Royal

I have heard nothing of the sort, and quite frankly would be very surprised if the top 2 would have a problem. These Major shows have really cracked down on the testing, and the people that have the steers that can run at these shows know this.  Many of these shows are doing a very good job...

    2017 Ft. Worth Steer Judge

I am going to bail him out on this, and assume the term "greatest" to mean greatest in participation and purse.  This way we don't have to argue about where the best steers are. For the sake of conversation, I have a few friends that go south to fit at Fort Worth every year.  They have both...

    Coon footed steer

I understand that many judges use the term "coon footed" as a compliment, there can certainly be a point in which it is too much. The easiest way to fix it is with fitting and hair.  When you have one that can move, and is structurally sound, then you can fit them about as straight as you want...

Need advice on using a cooler room on calves

Don't worry too much about growing hair this time of the year.  Mother nature will give you all the help you will need.  Just get them in and tie them up.  Blow them out real good.  Give them a bath if they are filthy, but otherwise just get them used to being around people.

Need advice on using a cooler room on calves

We put them in about 9:00 am.  A little daylight doesn't hurt them. We never ever rinse/wash more than once a day.  I would say that in any given 7 day period of time, we probably rinse them 6 times.  However, we do keep them clean and we do work their hair. We keep the cooler 65 degrees.  We...

    How much to feed.......

There are as many answers are there are people answering. We feed 3% of their body weight in show feed (corn, protein, and whatever else is in there) plus all the hay they want.

    Online Sales

Lots of information in this thread.  These are my opinions based upon several days of pounding up and down the road looking for steers. There are a whole lot of club calves being sold this year.  Within those club calves are a whole lot of bad cattle.  Soundness is at an all time level of bad. ...

    I Deliver

I have never used him, but I have looked at quite a few steer calves out of him this fall.  I just don't know that I would ever use a club calf bull on a heifer.

    Implant help

There should be absolutely no problems. It is when you start double dosing and the "like" when you run into issues. No harm.

Thoughts on this steer calf. Yellow jacket x Point taken

The calf is very hard to look at...however, Good on the ground as far as softness in his pastern and nice hook on the front legs. Looks like he is good haired considering he has probably never had a bath. If he is good in his top on level ground, and he is good fronted once you get all of...

    AIR CONDITION BARNS / BUILDINGS

It all comes down to math/engineering. A fat steer will put off about 10,000 BTU of body heat per hour.  Providing that the cool room is sealed well and insulated well, that means that you need a 10,000 BTU A/C unit just to keep the room at the outside temperature.  Good rule of thumb is to...
