This week I will be taking more photos :D I thought I would post one of the heifer calves I processed yesterday.  Note the way she was tagged by her breeder, for those who are skeptical it seems this commercial breeder is taking more pride in his cattle's Shorthorn heritage then many purebred producers (even if she is black she is half Shorthorn).

These calves with the blue roan faces are by Diamond Rising Legend 1R, he ran with the black cows last year. I don't remember seeing that marking before.

I love the face on this guy!
This year I am not helping my oldest son with picking a steer (he's 10) He prefers black cattle but we have very few black calves this year. He has already picked one out though and I think he might be on the right track. He's out of a white shorthorn bull and a angus X cow. Even if I don't like him in the fall, and my son still wants him, he is taking him to 4-H next year.  I second oldest can join in the fall and the one I would pick for him is the yellow/white one. Out of the same white shorthorn bull (Northern Legend son) and Angus x charlois X cow. These are pics of them when they were just born, I'll have to post updated ones the next time I take my camera out

Just thought I'd add another pic to the thread. Here's a Shorthorn sired calf (3 weeks old) standing next to his mom - a Simm x Short cow.

Here are some updates. The pics don't really show it well (my calf pics never turn out good) but you can put your dinner plate on the calves backs and it won't fall off. Lovin' my shortie crosses. The calf sucking on the cow is my favourite heifer calf this year. The black one is my oldest son's favourite for 4-H. The other 2 calves are potential 4-H projects for my second oldest boy.

Thanks for a great post Jaimie. It seems we've got one of the best kept "secrets" in the cattle industry. One of our bull customers runs about 250 head of straight bred Shorthorns and retains ownership through closeout. I had the opportunity to visit with the feedlot owner where they are fed. He has been very impressed with the feed conversion. He told me that the Shorthorn pens were the best money makers he had in 2010. He also shared that the packer was really excited about the carcass quality. These folks didn't even know what a Shorthorn was 3 years ago! JIT has commented about how his bull buyers often select the roans first, as the feeders like to visually ascertain the Shorthorn blood. I hope that catches on down here South of the 49th!
How many years before we see it down here at 36 degrees/30 minutes Noth Latitude? :-\ :-\

I thought I would post two more commercial Shorthorn heifers. The first heifer is a mid March female and the second heifer in the video is a end of April.  First heifer is out of a Shorthorn Angus and sired by a Shorthorn, second heifer is out of a Angus cross by a the same Shorthorn bull.

Very very sweet!  Right now, if you had a pasture of blue heifers like these, you could basically name your price! They are a hot commodity in these parts!

No, your supposed to sell some of those good roan bull calves you have to commercial Angus herds so they can get heifers like that (thumbsup)

well for better or worse, we were given an offer to purchase a herd of commercial (mostly) shorthorn cows with calves at side, a few heifers and the herd bull. We took the plunge and bought the herd. Here are a few pictures of the new herd.
