Look these bulls up on Cattle.com.  It's a good resource to find out more about a bull, their offspring, and how they sell.  Who Made Who is an older bull, but he's the sire of or maternal sire of a lot of good cattle.  We're talking a very good foundation.  Just like the Simmental bull Meyer.  As far as Jake's Proud Jazz, the come small, are vigorous, grow well, have lot's of style and work for steers or heifers.  And they'd be registrable as Shorthorn Plus.  You might not care but it is a marketing bonus when you go to sell your calves.

If you are still young enough, try and get on a judging team.

Try and see people's herds of cattle.

Ask to see their cull pens.

Observe what goes to the sale barn.

Observe what sells at the sale barn.

Ask people what they bought and what hey are going to do with them.

Go look at someone's open heifers/cows that are going to town.

All the above mentioned bulls are no guarantee you will have good cattle.

You sound like you need a local mentor and more access to lots more cattle to give yourself more confidence in your decisions. To me, you seem like you are running at the solution with money. There are too many people who will accommodate that. Be careful.

I think that cows got plenty of power, you have to remember that she is a she and you cant compare her in terms of muscle to say.. a market steer. With that, I think her main issue is in her front end and you need to select a bull that is clean fronted (not choppin wood or smilin bob as were suggested earlier) and is backed by maternal genetics if you are looking to make replacement females. So when you take that into consideration, I-80 really is a good choice. As well as several others with Ali in their pedigree. (thumbsup)

A complaint on Ali's sire was he was too straight.

Combined with clubby genetics, you could get some straight.calves.

Anywhere u can go to see some of the crosses you are considering?

You seem focused on breeding on the Internet.

What other sources of information have you utilized?

so if they have ali in the pettigree they are good for this cow??
That's not what i meant, I'm sure there are  plenty of bulls with Ali in their blood that would be a bad match up, just as their are many that would be good.  The bloodline is known for its maternal traits and I80 is a stylish bull which is why i think he could work with your cow. I wasn't trying to say that everything with Ali on its pedigree would automatically work, i just meant that if you come across another bull that you like phenotypically, and then it turns out to have Ali, or Who, or Meyer on its pedigree it could potentially be a good choice for your situation. If that makes any sense  :)

Nobody can tell you what will definitely work. Picking breeding options on cows that you haven't had calves out of is more of an educated guessing game, you look at what your cows needs (in your case a better front end), then you choose your goal for the calf, then you make your decision. Couple bulls I would look at that haven't been mentioned for maternal heifers would be Mercedes Benz and Simple Math. I'd advise you to spend a night looking up as much info as you can find on the bulls that have been suggested then decide which YOU think will work best in your situation. Good luck!

I'm sorry, but this is all over the place.  First it's about good maternal replacement females and then it's about steers.  Which is it.  I think the power is there and agree with the person who said add some maternal genes and another who suggested more feminine, clean front ends.  And if they happen to have bull calves which you would cut, then they're pretty and muscular.  What more could you want.

*Again, like some one asked, or suggested, find someone that knows the business that will help you and not screw you.  Read articles in magazines.  Don't look at all the glossy adds.  Don't believe everything you read or hear online.  You should know where these cattle came from, not what the newest Promotional Bull promises.  Basics.
