Pinzgauer-The Practical Breed
About 500 AD., Alpine herdsmen, who ran their cattle on small, widely scattered, rocky pastures, had begun to develop a breed of red and white cattle from the native red Bavarian cattle. These early cattlemen selected animals that could withstand the harsh conditions and still produce meat and milk. Farmers in the highly productive valleys and other lush areas of Bavaria, developed larger, brown and spotted (flecked) breeds of cattle from the same original, native seedstock. Later in history, Pinzgauer attained their present form and color. The designation "Pinzgauer" drives from the "Pinzgau" district in the province of Salzburg, Austria, and appears for the first time in documents of the 1600's. Herd books dated in the 1700's show that selective breeding had been going on for some time, and there are records of exportations of "Pinzgauer Cattle" to Rumania, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia in the 1820's. In 1871 Pinzgauer cattle were sent to the Paris World Exhibition. In the early 1900's, a number of breeding cattle were exported to South Africa, which has the second largest herd of fullblood animals in the world today.

Good job canes! Now do you know who Thomas Vanek is? (also from Austria) - that would be worth one of xxcc's bonus points!

If aj and Telos are related and the sister was actually my neice's second cousin twice removed I guess that means that aj and telos and I are related....

ok xxcc (aka wise apple) need a bit of a hint here - pretty cow - she looks grey - is that a breed characteristic or are you a funky photographer? She also looks a little dairy...WE NEED A HINT!

Yup Red you are right and you get some of xxcc's points (he thinks they are his to give away!
  (lol)

PS Sabres play Ottawa tonight (we find them to be an unpleasant team) ....all together now ---GO SABRES!~

yep, she is grey.  hint - the pic was not taken in the US.  google question: how many other countries in the world does that leave to choose from?

here's another pic from a different herd, but the same breed.

not a murray grey or a belgian blue - or a maine cross for that matter.  murray grey's are an Angus derivative. belgian blues are double muscled, but not quite as bad as these maine deviants  - the pics are of a murray grey, belgian blue and maine.

I believe that the grey cow in xxcc's picture which he graciously shared with us is a perfect example of the Swedish Slate Gray cow, a dual purpose breed from the hinterlands of Swedeny that is considered rare - there are only 300 in the world and they all belong to Svem Swenson - so it must be his herd. The cows name is Ingrid, she considers herself a liberal Democrat, is anti war, and belongs to no formal church. She also breeds on one service, carries twins (same gender), calves unassisted, weans her weight on grass, and smiles hapily throughout the year. She loves cold weather.

actually, i think she is of the conservative type, because she may be so tight you might pop a vein in your forhead attempting to insert your left arm while trying to palpate during preg checking or AI'ing - (ok...so there's a wee bit of a hint built in their, are you quick enough to catch it? ???)

Well, having little arms and able to palpate heifer twin to a bull calves at a very young age - you might pop a veuin, but I likely won't! How about a minature Irish Jersey or better yet a mini Barbee???I am sure there is more hint hidden there but it is almost 2 am and I am not sure why I am not asleep!
