From what I hear new breeders should gravitate to Sullivan and Cagwin. They are very helpfull in giving the new operation some direction.

A Sullivan's bull won NWSS this year. If you want some really high quality semen for your herd I would try to get some from those folks, they have amazing stuff!!

SULL genetics are everywhere, they have been winning... if your looking to spend 20000+ to stand 2nd in class go there to buy a heifer calf...  Cagwin's do a nice job- their cattle are a wide variety of things...  Mission is a commercially oriented shorthorn bull- if there ever was one- but their follow-up canadian bulls are the real deal.  Cagwins' are super nice people!  Anywhere you look though, you will find super nice Shorthorn breeders- epecially on here...  feeder duck, TMJ, ventable, shorthdawg, oh shorth, oakbar, etc,etc...  running out of time to mention em all...

You don't have to spend 20k at Sullivan's to get a calf of good quality. I got one for much much less than that this fall, and she's the best calf I've ever had, and I've spent some money on heifers before.

SULL Prime Time won Kansas City, NAILE, and NWSS.

I believe Primetime's semen is available only to semen share holders.  However, there are lots of good Shorthorn bulls to use depending on the genetics of your cows and where you want to go with the offspring.

Feel free to PM me or any of the Shorthorn enthusiasts on SP with questions.  Great breed of cattle and great people!!

we have had  great luck with genetics doing well at all price ranges, are sale toppers have sold well and have did well however we have had  a lot of success  with reasonable priced genetics as well.the most recent example is at the nwss. the div. 3 champion in the jr. show cost less then 4500. for john reasor of ga. she also has won quite e few shows for him.the grand champion shorthornplus female sold for under 5000. for joseph o'sullivan she was also reserve at k.c and has won several shows in mn.the div. 4 champion in the jr. show and reserve in the open show for kane augerter cost 6700. and has been a major show contender everywhere she goes.we take great pride in helping customers all we can. with all due respect to the great shorthorn breeders in this great breed i would venture to say we have sold as much success as any at a reasonable price point of 5000 and under,it has been a solid source for strong repeat customers.  we really enjoy watching the kids and the cattle devolop.

John, I think it is great that you are posting here. You should be proud that there are posts debating whether your family's single handed dominance of the breed is good or bad.

It would be a lot easier for people to hate you if you werent so damn nice.

thank u for the nice words yuppie.  the  shorthorn breed is full of outstanding breeders. there is a heck of set of breeders and people in the breed. breed is too tough and strong  to consider a breeder to dominate it,  the diversity in genetics, the people and goals is refreshing and good for the overall stregnth  of the breed. i have alot of respect for the breeders that built the foundation of the shorthorn genetics .

This a great post. I'm often amazed at the jeaulousy that is shown towards the Sullivans, the Cate's and god only knows the grief some of the clubby producers and so called steer jocks get on these message boards. LAST TIME I NOTICED, I DIDN'T KNOW OF ANY OF THESE FOLKS TWISTING ANYONE'S ARM TO PURCHASE THEIR CATTLE.I have met and actually know most of these people, and I'd bet damn near everyone that bashes, haven't met or tried to get to know these folks. So what if one particular family wins more shows than others? most of the 20,000.00 plus heifers or cows that are bought, end up being donor females.Just because someone has a different way of obtaining their goals, through financial ability or just plain horse sense,it doesn't make it wrong.Almost everyone that wins a lot at every level, gets labeled as a cheat. Some folks couldn't buy or raise a great calf even with the financial means to do so. Let's live and let live, raise the best calves to your ability, maybe cull a little harder, invest in better genetics, and with a little luck and hard work your road to better success may end up with purple at the end and with more dollar signs in your checkbook.

didn't mean to get a bashing party started. we love the shorthorn bred and want to keep them on our farm and with all the diff. ways to go with your breed i will have to say that the post from "jsull" is correct there are a lot of good breeders out there and it all depends on what you want to do with your cattle and i am just starting so if if anyone wants to spend 20,000 on a heifer i would sell one for that  (lol). congrats to the sullivan shorthorns and to all that shorthorn breeders that or out there because if it was not for ya'll we would not have cattle because my wife is very much not a fan of black cattle. she loves the shorthorns and always will. she wants to look out and see the roans, red ans whites and reds. yes we have crossbred cattle but they are of the color cattle. with the exception of one black heifer that i keep mostly because she is more like a family pet than a cattle.

John...I am so glad you have posted also. You have a great family. You have a friendly outfit. Criticism toward is very unjust and filled with jealouscy. You have moved the breed forward at  a breath taking rate. I wish every breed had dedicted breeders like you to move the breed forward. Thank you John. I love you man. Keep up the good work. And god bless the Shorthorn breed and as far as that goes the entire North American continent. And give us now are daily bread. Bread made from grain that ffa'rs have given their lives for. Let us as Democrats and republicans work together to improve the lives of our fellow man. In the name of our jesus....amen....amen....and please.....please...remember the less fortunate people out there......that have never won the great purple ribbon in the world of forever and hope and forgiveness. God bless America for which it stands...one nation under God indivisable by only even numbers. And let us forgive the the people who raise black cattle....for the know what not they have done.....amen.

AJ, Did you ever think that sometimes its better to remain silent and appear a fool, than to open your mouth(post) and remove all doubt?  I know you like to be viewed as someone who will"stir the pot" and, I've even defended you from time to time on SP,  but once in a while you should probably give a little more consideration to your comments before you post them.  I still appreciate a lot of your thoughts and ideas but please don't feel you have to put other people down every time you post something or pretty soon people will just start discounting everything you say.  I don't want that to happen.  JMHO

we can't improve others without improving ourselves first.

if people need purple ribbons, make a show for them.

My first question is what are your bloodlines? I think, this just my opiinion, that certain bloodlines seem to click. We have had luck with Sonny on Double Stuff lines. I have used older genetics with some of the older maine genetics(Cunia) and have some great replacement females. WOuld lke to hear what you have.
