I gestation EPD could be pretty useful.  Based on 283 days, one was born on due date but others have been 2-6 days over. Ironically the 289 day calf was the smallest: 72lb heifer.
Farming tends to throw all theories to the wind, doesn't it!

Did the mother step on the calf's tail?  There looks like there is a piece missing on the second photograph, or is it a badly angled picture?

Pretty coloured calf.

BTW, was at my place this morning and had a calf late morning.  Look at the miserable bl**dy jackal near the left fence post in the picture.  Shouted and waved my arms and he looked at me as if I was mad!  Rifle was back home, as usual in this type of situation!

I am pretty pleased with where Diamond Prophecy 21P has come out on the new EPD's. He was in the top on the old system and has moved into the top 1% for MCE, BW and top 4% for calving ease. The MCE # of +13.9 is right off the charts as a +9.1 puts a bull in the top 1%! His $CE is in the top 2% and his $BMI is in the top 10% as is his milk. Definitely good maternal numbers. We have been putting bulls with more growth over his daughters and they calve easily. We are using a son, Northern Alphonso 15A and am looking forward to his first calves.
I see the Saskvalley Taskforce 105T is at the very top for CE and BW.

This is our heifer bull Muridale Hero 31Z
Sire- BONNYVIEW HERO 7Z ( born in the 1960's)
Dam sired by Saskavalley Bonanza
BW- 70 lbs
BW EPD- -4.6
CE - +12.9

We used him last year and we were pleased with the results, with his calving ease and how well the calves did on grass this summer. This year we bred him to 50 heifers.

Good looking bull (thumbsup)
He is an interesting blend of an old bull being brought back over some of today's most popular genetics. To me his great calving ease # of +12.9 is even better than the -4.6 BW number. May be the best numbers for a calving ease bull for heifers on this entire thread <beer>

I really liked this bull when we toured your heifers! 37S is also the mother of the Mocha yearling you sold at CWA a couple years ago, correct? Was a big fan of that heifer too.

37S is a great looking cow  <beer>

Was there a picture of 31Z's dam that I missed?
What do you think Hilldale Commander brought to Hero's breeding?
Do you have a picture of Beowulf?
Thanks

Coyote,  I really like the Beowulf bull, but as I am a member of the "Red" group. I probably would not use him unless I was trying for a roan show calf.  I have learned to be very careful with roans.  In South AL roans get labeled as Longhorn Cross regardless of quality, and I am not in a position to retain ownership.

Out here, angus get labeled as no rear end, sort of like polled Herefords used to.

On the other hand, they still command the most premium.

Long live roans!  They're the best.  Nothing prettier than a roan calf standing by a roan cow in the green grass with a roan bull in the background.  Only one thing more boring than a red calf.  That's a black one!
