Single parents in the steer show world?

My theory is that if you are spending time with your daughter doing what she loves, then win or lose you can't go wrong.  Too many parents provide monetary support without putting in the hours and emotional support - and they're the ones who miss out.  Go for it....she will remember this later...

    COW DOWN UPDATE!

FANTASTIC!  Hope she continues to improve.  We had one the vet told us would probably never recover (you could hear the 'grind' sound in her lumbar), she's a little slow but has given us 3 really nice calves since - just requires a little extra care.  Cowman52 has helped us out plenty of times!

    Tail bleeding for preg checking

We've been using the SEK test for a while now & are pleased with getting results so quickly.  We still do "heat watch" to see if we missed an AI, but it has really helped us to know within 30 days in case we missed a heat.  Arthritic hands just have a hard time on palpation preg check nowadays!

4 years ago tomorrow (Why is the SP Logo Red?)

Totally agree.  She was the first to welcome me and I always appreciated her sincere attitude on any questions I had.

    Vet preg check

We've been using the SEK preg test & it sure makes the AI program smoother.  Our weather has been so atrocious the cows don't want to jump anybody!

    Help! Cow Down

After reading the replies, had to go back & re-read your post.  If I understand correctly, this was not a dystocia problem but possibly trauma caused by the bull.  If she's alert & eating/drinking well I'd give it a few days.  Unfortunately it's not usually good news if the bull breaks them...

    Calf can't stand

Wonderful!  You may have to keep supplementing him until he has enough strength to latch on to momma.

    Calf can't stand

It seems like those big calves just take longer to get it together, especially after dystocia.  Getting the colostrum in him ASAP was great.  If he started sucking you're in the home stretch - we've had big shorthorn calves that we've had to tube for days.  Agree with frostback - stimulating him...

    1st calf of 2013

@JTM, yes it is a heifer but all Red Angus (sire is my avatar).  We have both reds and Shorthorn - have done some crossing to produce Durham Red & really like that combination.  The grandsons have shown steer crosses in the Production Steer contests here & won or placed 2nd every time.  The...

It's Not About Winning, It's About Deserving to Win

What a wonderful essay.  This young lady gives me hope for the future of our youth!  As a breeder, we also show what we raise and are proud of them whether they stand first or last.  Congratulations and I truly hope you can keep that attitude through your show career.

    1st calf of 2013

Chaco's (Red Angus) first calf is here, 82 lbs out of our biggest & heaviest BW cow so I expect lower weights on the rest (pictured at 6 days old).  Easy-born & up nursing withing 20 minutes.  Sorry about the quality of pics - I hate my camera, or it could just be the photographer!  Next up is a...

    Ethics

Been to a breed National once - never again.  "I love the breeding side of the cattle business,  nothing is better to me than raising a kick butt heifer especially when she turns into a great cow."  You said it right!
