    AI-ing

Take the class! It's worth it. I actually went to two, an ABS and a Select Sires one. I used to work as a beef technician for a university so I had to be very good. Now I get to use those techniques on my own cattle. Also, if you are a college or high school student, ask about a discount.

I have a bull calf that his hooves seem to spread apart wider than other calves

Does there appear to be a tab of skin between the toes? It might be a hairy wart. Hopefully not; they keep growing back.

    Kent's Winning Fill

I decided to keep feeding it to my little 7.5 month old bull calf until next year when I show him again as an experiment. He's has the "show" look more than most of the cattle that I own. I can tell that he starting to look a little fuller already than he did at the fair. This is a good thing...

    question about a breed cow

Bred cows around here are bringing about $1,100 to $1,300 bred NS with a calf at the side. Bred heifers are bringing $1,800 AI bred and $1,600 NS bred IF they are out of proven calving ease bulls. Probably a lot less if they are not bred to something else.

    Kent's Winning Fill

I gave them a little this morning. They ate it all. I'll probably give them more this afternoon and at the show give them about 5 lb/head. Thanks!

    Kent's Winning Fill

I got two bales of Winning Fill recently. I have never used this product but have heard great things about it. I noticed that there are no feeding directions on the bag other than you can feed it leading up to the show or just on show day. Since I only have two bales I will use it on show day...

    Class ring help

I got mine from Jonsten's and it has a graphic of a calf, pig, and lamb in one graphic. It is such a busy image that it's kind of hard to tell what it is on the actual ring though. It would look better on a guy's ring. That was 6 years ago though. Only wore the thing probably 5 times, lost...

    Aluminum fencing

I've seen people with aluminum grooming chutes wrap the head catching part with vet wrap to keep the aluminum from rubbing off on their cattle.

    Prolate Fly Spray

Endure fly spray works well. It's actually for horses but it works on show cattle too; it's a little expensive ($20 per bottle) but it really works. It doesn't smell as bad as Prolate either IMO. I always had pretty good luck with the Prolate mixture too for both spraying and back rubbers but I...

    Dying cattle

I use Black Velvet and dilute it down with Kleen Sheen so I only have to use one kit per animal. If they have white on them, I cover the white with Vasoline. I leave the dye in for about half an hour with the calf tied in the shade then I rinse them out and blow dry them. I get the Vasoline out...

    calf with bad eye

We had a pinkeye outbreak last summer/fall in our herd and we did what a lot of people posted on here. Vetricyn eye wash in the eye, LA200, pinkeye vaccination, and we glued an eye patch on them with that kind of glue they use for numbers at sale barns. By the time the patch fell off their eye...

    orphaned calves as show animals?

You can show animals that were bottle fed as calves. If you do it right you can't tell the difference between them and the ones that were raised on their mama.

    AI School

Contact your local semen salesman or your local extension office. I went to a Select Sires school and an ABS school. The reason I went to two was because the Select Sires instructor recommended it in order to get it down better. I took them two years apart. I was lucky though because my work...

    Calf Names

Alvin Apollo AltaVista (since the sire is named Yahoo  ;D) Aristotle Arnold Angelo Ash Axel (I like this name, I named one of my calves Axel :)) I'm just glad I don't have to think of any more Z names!  <beer>

What's the best way to get calves to drink at shows?

The best thing I've found is to simply fill the buckets up before hand and let them set out in the sun and get warm. I guess the heat bakes the chlorine smell out of the water. They drink it just like the water at home! I only show in the fall though so it might be harder to make it work this...

Brillance, Bismark, Unbelievable or First Impession

I've seen a lot of really good calves out of the Bismark bull. The new herd bull at the farm I work at is out of Bismark and he is gorgeous.

Thank you, mainecattlemother! I'll look into finding that kind for when I run out of Black Velvet.  :)
