Info on some more old shorthorn bulls

Long and tall with no acetol (sound it out) caused this to happen.  Without bashing any part of the Shorthorn breed (same thing works for Angus and Herefords), it developed when larger frame was the craze.  Long, tall, light-muscled critters were winning the ribbons and being promoted as...

    Harlan Ritchie

Dr. Ritchie is still teaching us. Librarian's post about cattle type is worth your time.  "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Here is Librarian's suggestion once more: https://msu.edu/~ritchieh/historical/cattletype.html  Have a look--you will be glad you did.

Thanks for posting that link--we need to study history so it will not repeat itself.  Both links posted are worth your time.  All of us stand on the shoulders of people like Dr. Ritchie.

65% of the Shorthorn breeds current design is based on show heifers.

In the early '60's at the state fair a very successful owner suggested that his herdsman may have changed the birth dates, when asked about how their cattle seemed very large compared to the others in class.  The herdsman, when asked, said the owner might have moved the birth dates.  Everyone...

JSF The One and BFS Red Reality Opinions/Calves

Is there any chance the bull you are asking about is JSF RED REALITY 72Y?  Bollum Family Shorthorns own or owned him.  We purchased our herd sire from them and they are highly-reputable.  Everything was exactly like they said it was.  Their data is real.  Why not call them up and ask?  They...

65% of the Shorthorn breeds current design is based on show heifers.

There was a herd in either Brazil or Argentina many decades ago that had tens of thousands of Shorthorn cows.  Was it Dugan or Duggan?  That was probably in the '50's or 60's.

    11 out of 13

A neighbor with another British breed and I used to load a trailer with fall-born steer calves to go to TX each spring.  Consistently calves by his own bulls suited the buyer better than his AI calves, which were more extreme in type.  There is a lot of good to be said for moderation--I wonder...

    Blenview Chaser 204C.....

Many of us do not have a bull that will place ahead of that flashy calf in the show ring.  It is not everyone's choice to show and breed show cattle.  However, one of the functions of the show ring is to evaluate soundness, and many judges are very capable of that.  Most show cattle are powerful...

Kinnaber Leader 9th - Big Gene

Big Gene calves were docile and his daughters milked well.  Leader 9th calving ease and marbling are outstanding!  The challenge is to blend these old (almost 50 years) genetics with some of the growth and other traits we expect now in our cattle.

    Sangamon Irish Plumber

Wasn't he the sire of Woodland Myrtle 8419, the cow pictured as the ideal Shorthorn cow in Herman Purdy's book, Breeds of Cattle?  Was that cow about 61" tall?  She probably was thick for an animal with that much frame.  Joe Woods was humble about breeding her, and was she the one that sold for...

Kinnaber Leader 9th - Big Gene

Yes, those are both pictures of Leader 9th.  One reason he looks different, other than color, is his stage of maturity, don't you think?  We were not keen about his white belt on one side, but most of his non-red calves were more even roan. We used him and liked his calves, especially the...

    Byland Mission's daughters udders?

Ours were good.  I doubt that either Byers or Cagwin (CCS) would put up with problems.  Do you think the good udders on them are partly because of Rodeo Drive back in their pedigree?

    Bull I purchased

He's a good bull--I like his construction.  We used to show two-year-old bulls and most of the guess work about development is past by then.  His pedigree has some classics as well as cattle prominent in some of the better real world cattle now.

First Calf Shorthorn Heifer bull options

ASH VALLEY RIGHT CHOICE 321 looks useful.  Do the owners have any calves on the ground yet?  No births have been reported.  He has some eye-appeal, good EPD's, and has been promoted a little bit.

First Calf Shorthorn Heifer bull options

If you want a calving ease bull that will add pelvic area (CEM) JSF Gauge 137W would be another one to consider.

First Calf Shorthorn Heifer bull options

We also like BFS Master Prince and plan to use him again.  Another high quality bull with similar $CEZ is Kaper 4508, and we continue breeding to him as well.

    A few bull pics

Someone else can define appendix (identified by using asterisk as part of registration number?), but this is related.  JJC Wild Side has some breeds other than Shorthorn in his pedigree, and it is printed right there; yet, he is not an appendix bull himself until you get back a couple of...
