    vaccinations

I think it's really important to talk to your vet to get a recommended protocol specific to your area and your herd. You might need something more or less than what we need here.

Week old calf bucked over at knees

It's funny how differently vets do things.  Our vet is the one that told us to use the NuFlor.  I've noticed for our newborn calves the smaller dose of NuFlor get them going faster than the repeated doses of pen. I am concerned about the resistance issue as well.  We seem to be using NuFlor...

Week old calf bucked over at knees

I was wondering the same thing on NuFlor.  That's what we use since and have had great success rates.  I can't think of a re-treated calf for navel infection since we started using it.

I'm glad to hear all is well!

    month old calf problem

I would highly recommend you talk to a vet you trust about the multiple doses of Baytril on young calves and the growth plate issues.  Our vets are outstanding and I was not aware of it until they were here the last time.

    month old calf problem

I would check with the vet too. 2-3 ccs of Dex is a lot higher than what our vet has us give baby calves. We're using NuFlor and good old pen on respiratory and dex if necessary.  Baytril has some growth plate issues so our vets aren't recommending using it much on the calves. We use Exceed...

    man among boys calves.

I agree completely with CAB. Our BIM calves definitely do not have the same depth as our MABs.  I have full sibs that are big girls.  One had a MAB and the other had a BIM.  No comparison that the MAB is a much better calf.  However, I do think the BIM will be a little later maturing so I am...

    I-80 calf pictures, please.

How many I-80 calves did you have and what kind of cows? I think I'm going to take pics of I-80 calves and the cows we used him on to show the other side of the coin!  I didn't use him on anything needing any power or mass and really only used him on something needing more extension and a...

    Breeding opinions?

We seem to be the exception and this is not the popular opinion but I-80 flat out didn't work on our cows.  Especially on cows like yours.  If you are going with what's in your tank my pick would be Mercedes Benz. Whizard worked well on our cows that might be similar to yours to compare. ...

    What to do?

I watched an 8 day old Angus bull calf jumping around the ring at the sale barn bring 400.00 a few weeks back.  Other calves not quite as happy to be there were 325-350.  It's bad enough to lose a calf let alone lose one to a thief. Did you guys put up cameras?  I'm watching 2 cows calve right...

    What to do?

That is extremely odd and really too bad.  Were these AI calves maybe someone had an eye on and happened to have a cow to take them? Since she is acting so different I would palpate her ASAP.  Do you AI yourself?  A uterine torsion is something I don't think you forget.  You palpate vaginally...

    What to do?

Do you mean the calf was starting into the pelvis? Is she acting funny at all? We've had uterine torsions before but my experience is you almost always see something.  I would gently palpate her vaginally to make sure everything feels ok.  Did you ever find your newborn calves that were stolen?

    man among boys calves.

We have all black out of both bulls except 1 red/white heifer.  I have 2 more MABs to go. I haven't figured out the average on them yet but it will probably be in the mid 80s.  The high on both bulls was  92 and a BIM today at 78.  We've pulled BIM and MAB calves but not because of shape.  A...

    man among boys calves.

I don't have any pics but we have 8 or 9 of them. Ours have quite a bit of bone, length, all have better than average mass, and just that look to them.  I used him on bigger cows with a lot of body and that move real well with pretty decent front ends.  I will use him again.  The verdict is...

New Angus Ads (no need for crossbreeding)

The EXT daughters were not mine and I agree they were outstanding mothers.  I loved a good EXT cow when I was about 15 years younger!  I saw a lot more bigger EXT cows than small but I also remember most of the EXT calves I saw were out of big cows.  This place had the big gates because those...

New Angus Ads (no need for crossbreeding)

When you remember back to your words in 5 years I think you will be pretty embarrassed OP.  That's ok we've all been there. I remember a few purebred registered Angus cows bearing a striking likeness to a holstein cow without spots.  My Grandpa always said you give a cow with a calf space and...

    calving

BW has not really been our problem.  It's the head back, backwards, upside down, head first calves that are giving us the trouble.

    Cows in heat??

Are you in an area with some pretty tough weather? We are skipping the CIDRs this year.  I was talking to one of our vets about what appears to be a skipped cycle if they don't stick and I have had too much of it the past few years to want to try it again. They get so late it's not worth it to...

    calving

CAB one of our vets said that sort of thing is hitting hard this year.  No real specific obvious problem just more of a generalized weakness that gets worse.  We are really selenium deficient around here so we give BoSe when they are born.  That usually snaps them around pretty quickly but not...

    calving

In 30+ years this is the most "educational" and frustrating calving season ever.  Several AI cows are overdue while some AI'd the same date to same bull were about 10 days early. We've had the vets out more in the past week than we have in at least 6 months.  A twisted gut on a Monopoly 2...
