    CUT or BULL

Some of these bigger joints we are getting in cattle don't bother me as much, not enough flex at this age does.  If I was in the pasture, I don't think I'd risk him as my project steer if I could only have one.  If he holds together, he'll be cool.  That being said, I'd cut him.  But then again...

rolled corn versus steam rolled corn

They may keep longer, but the utilization of steam flaked corn far exceeds that of plain rolled corn.  It really depends on what you are trying to do if you need it or not.

How much are monopoly calves worth?

We went out on a limb and did a Monopoly x SOS x 9FB3 flush.  We'll see the results.  For top notch show steers, will they work being 1/2 angus? I don't think so.  Could 1/4 Heat Wave 1/4 Sim 1/2 angus make some females that are very interesting for today's show ring?  I think so.  IF they milk...

    Slick vs Hair shows

Just to play devils advocate-- someone run with the argument of a market animal showing it's qualities?  Sheep, pigs, and goats are not hidden behind fur, for what reason should fat steers be exempt?  I am on board with instilling work ethic and the true work it takes to get hair, trust me we've...

    Slick vs Hair shows

I hear both sides of the story here.  Slicking does level the field, and it doesn't level the field.  Hear me out-- unless every project is picked from the same pen of pre-selected calves based on some random pre-determined order, the playing field will never be level because of different...

    1st Year taking Market Goats...????'s

For cover, over their ribs should feel like the top of your hand if you rub it.  If it feels like your knuckles it is too light and if it feels like over the first part of your finger it is too heavy.  80-85lbs is a pretty good weight to show at, I wouldn't want them much over 95 lbs.  A good...

Angus Bulls on Dream On cows

We used Ransom on a first calf Dream On heifer and her bull calf is very saleable.  He is really deep middled and soggy and wraps it up in a pretty neat package.  He's not a Heat Wave, but for what he is, we like him.  I think the right angus bull back on Dream On's could make some killer...

Teach me how to round bale

Feed the hay in silage wagons a whole bale at a time.  The dutch dairy most of the straw goes to has some contraption they use.  I've seen it in action, but can't think of the name at the moment.  It'll come to me and I'll post a picture.  It's really a neat deal.  We flake it off a flat bed in...

Teach me how to round bale

As far as EFFICIENCY goes, you can't beat BIG squares.  Neither can you beat them for moving or stacking.  If I had 2000 cows to feed, I'd want squares.  Round bales in square sheds doesn't make too much sense.  We bale several thousand acres of straw every summer along with a bunch of both ours...

    Polled Heifer Not So Polled

Keep in mind you're dehorning a "polled" hereford.  I'm not a herf guy, but I would guess that could be a breed classification problem.  Cosmetic dehorning would make her stand out in a class of polleds pretty easily.  Maybe someone better with herefords can help here.

    Fat Steer! Please help

120 days is a LONG time to try and hold one.  Everybody is going to tell you that, but it happens to everybody once and you're there now. He needs a little feed, a lot of filler (beet pulp fills and wheat bran keeps him moving) and a good high vitamin/high protein supplement to keep his luster...

    Show Goats

If you're showing wethers (think: steer), you actually don't want to wash them at all.  You'll show them slick sheared like lambs.  The cold water from washing them and blowing them out actually can hurt or ruin their hide (you want it to be tight and thin). If they get dirty spots, find a good...

    Show Goats

We're from Indiana, but have sold some goats to Iowa over the years, so take this for what it's worth.  Smith's have some pretty powerful bucks, but I haven't been able to make it through their stuff when we are out there. The pictures always look like they can get the job done, and look at...

    heat wave females

We've had good luck with HRF Hairy on Heat Wave influence cattle.  Just really seems to moderate them and help with soundness.  The steers or heifers will be sellable, in our experience.  With Lifeline on top and out of the Harrietta cow, it sure isn't going to hurt the maternals.

Walks ALone and My Turn Calf Pics....

We've got a real neat My Turn heifer calf out of an SOS first calf heifer.  The cow is not quite what you described as what to take him to, but hey she's our best one so far this year so it works for us!

    ABS Simmentals

So if I have a 600U grandaughter out of a Full Throttle cow, and wanted to breed for % simmentals, which bull out of the ABS line up would be best?  She's sound, very functional, decent muscling, decently clean front.  Just a good solid cow, doesn't blow you away anywhere but doesn't have any...

Long After Becoming Meat, Prized Steer is at the center of a Legal Beef

If this was proven to be true, didn't they file a false police report, though?  That is a C misdemeanor in the least, at least where I live.
