    clones just hype...

Natural selection dictates that there many individuals to select from . We are mother nature in this selection. We must try many combinations of genes before we find the nex ONE.

    Calf Slings...

back in the day when I di we used a hay net we had for the horses. I would put the calf in the net, put the net on the hanging scales and put the scale on the bale spike to do the lifting. It worked well

    Twins what causes them?

We have had 4 sets so far this year.  ( That's out of 25 cows so far)  I think I read recently that pre breeding diet has an effect. Ever since we started bringing them home to calve we have had at least 3 sets per year out of about 50 cows. Some think it could be the AI. But we were having lots...

Was drilling wheat one wet year and had to have two tractors around. One to drill with and one to pull myself out of the mud. I used a cable with a chain and hook attached, Was rolling up the cable on the flat bed of pickup and gave the last of it a flip and the chain and hook came at my face...

    Detecting problems

I could use some info. Could someone point me to info or discuss here about gomer bulls or similar options. I have a terrible time detecting heats after AIing once. My cows just do not communicate with me about heats for the second cycle. Most of the cows just don't seem to respond to a cow in...

    Sunseeker or Paddy?

Paddy has been OK for average cows for us. They dont have to be rocket front to be OK. We just showed a heifer at OKC two weeks ago that placed mid class of 15 calves. Another local family had a sunseeker this year that was really nice, loads of hair too, but I dont know the cow. They have been...

    Prolapsed Uterus

People, keep in mind that there are two kinds of prolaps. Uterine is where the whole uterus comes out, that is where the calf is growing before birth. Vaginal is just the outer portion up to the cervix, this is a dirty place anyway, urine and penises go here, to my experience this is the most...

    Red Maine Bulls?

I do not plan to use Nixon any more mainly because of the down sizing factor. I am using a shootgun approach to AIing with my commercial crossbred cows to try to produce show heifers. We have found some cow/bull combos that click and many that do not.

    Help Please with Implants

I don't have experience with show steers. As a commercial breeder we used Synovex C on all calves first time through the shoot and Synovex H or S at weaning depending on sex. We did this to replacement heifers for many years with no noticeable adverse effects. Our steers needed this because we...

    Prolapse- chance of happening again?

We had an unusual number of prolapses this year. Of about 50 cows we had 3 prolapses we had to get sewn up. Two before calving and one after, All three were vaginal, out to the cervex. We had never had one do this after calving before. My vet said get rid of them. From previous experiance, those...

    Infrared calf sizes

We have used infrared some. Never on heifers. The calves did not seem overly large, perhaps in the 80-90 pound range. They were very consistantly nice calves, I would like to use him but for the genetics problem.

    sire ?

For us, strictly commercial cows we started breeding clubby a few years ago. People suggested WMW . He has made super heifers but the bulls have been almost crippled. I thought I would have to eat one of them before it got to #800. It was still going strong when its mates went to the sale barn...
