I guess I'm confused.  My granpa talks about 1000lb roan durhams, as he still calls them,  that his dad ran with their herefords in the late 30s and 40s. What was likely the breeding of these durham cattle in this era?

I also ran across a sale catalog from a shorthorn dispersal in the 20s in Pennsylvania.  Clearly these genetics weren't from the Irish shorthorns.

nobody knows... shorthorn people are, and always have been-- and always will be... trend chasers...  those genetics are long gone and diluted down to non existence...  and now everything is maine, irish, or some other breed...

CTBS,There are a few leaders and a host of followers in every breed  and type of livestock, the followers seldom catch up or last and it is rare that new leaders come from their ranks.

Chandler those roan Durhams could have been anything. The Shorthorn breed of the 30's and 40's was probably the most diverse of anytime in Shorthorn history.I had a contingent of Angus breeders visit my herd about a month ago_One of them spoke about his grandfathers 800 cow red Durham herd [in the east mind you] that had been a closed herd from the 1880's till they were crossed with herefords during the 1940's.You will probably never guess which breed received the credit for the hybrid vigor.

Okotoks, that Royal Grant pedigree points out the interconectivity of the breed .The Lavender cow family was instrumental in the pedigree of Leader 21's sire.

. I actually have one vial of Meriwong Royal Grant in storage that I hope to use in the next year. Hopefully it is still good!

I find it interesting that the sire of Merriwong Royal Grant was sired by a bull that was bred in the US. The sire, Highbank Royal Duke, was bred in the US and his pedigree is mainly Oakwood and Leemon breeding. This was some of the first polled genetics to go to Australia. Royal Grant was a good sized bull ( I believe he was over 2400 lbs in pasture condition) . I had a full cane of Royal Grant but lost it along with about 100 vials of Pheasant Creek Leader 4th, a bunch of Irish Mist, several canes of Gloriadale Bonaparte( who was exported to South Africa in the 60s at $30,000) and 32 embryos when one of my tanks ruptured unexpectedly a few years ago. Fortunately, I still have two vials of Bogan Yalta who was an Aussie bull sired by Highbank Matchless Duke .Matchless Duke was also straight US bred and was very close in pedigree to Highbank Royal Duke. Bogan Yalta semen was purchased by Louis Latimer( Remitall) when he visited Australia in the late 60s. Yalta was also a bigger framed bull in that day. I have had very good luck with using old semen in flushes, and I am hoping the Yalta is still good.

I remember a bull named Dandaloo Royal Duke that I thought looked good back in the day.  I thought I remembered that Louada Farms had used him.  When you mentioned the Highbank bull, it brought back the memory of Royal Duke and I looked on the ASA website and found that Royal Duke was sired by the Highbank bul.  I also noticed that Dandaloo Royal Duke sired a bull that Louada used heavily towards the end of their herd named Kelso Ignition.  It just so happens that I was going through an old Shorthorn magazine last night and saw their 2 page ad with Ignition's photo in it.  It appeared that Dandaloo Royal Duke was used in numerous herds so there could be some semen lurking about.  I was actually looking for the Pheasant Creek ad so I could again compare the 4 Pheasant Creek Leader bulls they were promoting.  It is a lot of fun to go back through those old magazines.

Kelso was a top Aussie herd and their animals still appear in a number of pedigrees today. Breeders who purchased animals at their dispersal say they made some of their best breeding decisions that day; Kelso cattle have played a successful part in a number of herds.

Moombi Powerplay was the sire of JSVT Outback. That was the best one I ever worked on out of Moombi Powerplay

Could you be thinking of Marellan Super Dazzler?  I think he was probably the most popular Austrailian bull used over here lately.  I was told the Wyarama Pepper was the heaviest muscled Austrailian bull. (?)

I don't think that's him-- but it could be... that's a whole different world you know...

What do you want to know about Powerplay? Your description of the other Aussie bull doesn't help me... I was thinking either Super Dazzler or Belmore Ultra-Bright L22. Or the Mandalong bulls....

We took Diamond Captain Mark 27C s dam to Colorado (Frostback's) to flush to marellan super Dazzler and that flush didn't work but she was bred back for a natural calf by Dazzler and we brought that bull home and used him. He gave us some nice daughters as well he left some good calves at Circle M. A son of this bull went to Coulee Shorthorns in Washington. dazzler had the same sire line as Powerplay.

Weebolabolla Theodore T85 has nearly 1000 calves registered from over 120 herds in Australia. He features in a LOT of modern pedigrees.

Moombi Powerplay J89 was a 1989-drop roan calf bred by Lester and Sonya Job from Cumnock in NSW and owned by Iceway Farms in Houston. I am trying to find some photos as he was before my time.... someone on here may have an old catalogue with pics of him.

Moombi Powerplay is also the Grandsire of Eskimo Joe-and the Sire Of Crocadile Dundee-used by Harold Slick Hoskins-whose cattle were a bloodtyping nightmare-but boy were they good-He was a pioneer at breeding-Simmintal,Maines,and Charolais to Shorthorns instead of using no-ass harddoing Dairy cattle. Im basically the one who persuaded him to get-the embryos on PowerplayxCedar Curve Fara-when we saw the Echodale hiefers at Louisville (1992-or1993) and Wankels bull who became the sire of Eskmo Joe,I think Dan or Thom Mitchell bought one of them-they were cool.clubby looking, and ten years ahead of the curve. WE KNEW DAM WELL POWERPLAY HAD MAINE IN HIM-and that he was the Australian club calf bull per se.Harold also knew that between him and Cedar Curve Farah(who also had alot of fullblood) that alot of previous tracks would be covered when the ensuing bull(Dundee) got bred to his cows. He did:they moderated so fast in one generation that he started using Elbee and a certain red maine from Canada (Polled Mcgiver son)etc.Id love to have Powerplay semen now. O0

Here are a couple of photos of Moombi Powerplay.  But if BS knew everyone that had some involvment with the bull he would probably lose all interest.
