    Merry Christmas

Have been busy getting calves ready for Phoenix but wanted to take time to wish all Planeteers a Merry Christmas and a very healthy & prosperous new year.  Although I don't contribute much to the Planet, I have found it to be the most social and informative web site around and appreciate the...

    New Red Angus calf

Congratulations!  The arrival of our "little red rabbits" each spring is the most exciting thing.  We tag ours right after birth with really small tag so we can identify them then replace it with a large one at weaning.  Enjoy your little one and hope you have many more in the coming years.

    Market Steer

Bless your heart for having the guts to show heifers -- we have to fight like crazy to keep the breeding heifer numbers up at our county fair cause the steer show is the ultimate championship.  It seems like people forget that without good females there wouldn't be any hot shot steers!  We...

    Free Martin calves

There is such a thing as a "free martin probe" that the vet here uses to determine if the reproductive tract is a blind pouch on a young heifer.

    Bull are clean!

Thanks.  Sometimes a pat on the back for doing the 'right thing' is really appreciated.  I hope all the small breeders follow & then, like show heifer said, the burden will be on the 'big guys'.  Because we have a closed herd & linebreed this should clear up the pedigrees on almost all of our...

    Bull are clean!

Hooray!  Finally got the test results on the 7 Red Angus bulls we raised & sell semen on ... THEY'RE ALL OS FREE.  We're still waiting on the AM results but I expect them to be free also.  Just sent in blood samples on our two new herd bulls.

    Johnny Walker Rd

We have a JWR steer out of a red angus cow that we really like.  Lots of hair & great disposition but a bit framey & a little weak in the rear legs.  Also, & most important is that we've had low conception rates with JWR semen & I can't really blame it on the operator -- conception rate is high...

    EPD question..

I agree.  I remember when EPDs first came out & how a major breeder's EPDs so dramatically changed after a member of his family spent quite a bit of time at Colorado State (pure supposition of course, but interesting). We mostly linebreed so we already pretty much know the average BWs our cows...

    Mulberry

Exactly.  We linebreed & in 25 years have never had any "known" defective calves.  Yesterday I sent off test samples on the 7 bulls we offer semen on (even those that showed no carrier in their pedigree).  As a small breeder I believe it is the ethical thing to do to ensure my semen buyers are...

    Little help please!

force vs. understanding?  The easiest thing I've come up with is using the halters with a slide ring on them. On teaching them to lead I tug a little & if they take a step forward I reward with a release on the tension & praise them.  Sounds corny & is really time consuming but it works for...

what raising cattle and kids are all about!

ABSOLUTELY!  My grandkids keep me going.  I just hope I'm setting a good example for them to live by.  There isn't anything more precious than kids & livestock.

    This is for Knabe

Hey Julie, I'm with you...  I believe if the stimulus $$$ had been distributed to every TAX PAYING U.S. citizen we could have really stimulated the economy by going out & spending our own money thereby creating demand for products which would have created jobs to produce the products, etc., etc.

help - show heifer bloating daily

Good selection of choices for you.  The baking soda is good, if they will eat it.  Adding a cup of mineral oil to the feed has worked well for me most of the time.  Good Luck.
