    Saskvalley Yesterday

I have used three of the bulls mentioned, namely Yesterday, Gauge and Stockman. Yesterday and Gauge were both very impressive, and I have progeny of the Gauge progeny as well. I initially brought in 25-30 doses of each, and in both cases brought in another tranche of 25-30 doses. Gauge came in...

    Bulls don’t live long.

Before the internet and social media, news didn't move as fast. Currently, everyone wants to be at the forefront of their breed and everyone 'hypes up' their animals to keep them in the limelight and keep the semen sales high. In the club calf industry, if you don't have progeny of the latest...

    Bulls don’t live long.

The answer to both of these questions is the same, namely, information technology!

JMO, but, why do we import genetics from mediocre animals? I am the first to admit that I have done the same thing! Semex has a fairly large selection of bulls on offer, and I think that with the CE, BW and $CEZ that this bull has, that there would be some better choices. Maybe the importer has...

    Docilty scores

An Angus sire needs a docility score, compared to Herefords and Shorthorns that is! JMO

    Top Angus Sires by Registrations

Sorry, not an Angus breeder! Why has the semen on the original gone to $5000 a dose then? There is nothing worse for me than buying something, only to see it on sale the next week!

Balmyle Zeus and Balmyle Zephyr's Maine breeding

All the females in the pictures posted are magnificent! Like the Burke Trophy winning pair as well, so balanced, and the female has tremendous capacity. In my opinion the Nearhouse James bull, in the picture, is a bit posty in the hind legs.

    Unplanned mating that turned out!

In your second picture, 2D looks beter than her dam! Deeper.

    Shorthorn in hot weather....

We are regularly above 35C in summer, Alexandria district, South Africa. I am sure the Aussie breeders have temperatures that make ours look mild! My dad's place reaches 45C in summer, he has some Shorthorn/Hereford crosses but mainly purebred Herefords. Not as humid as Alexandria though. Our...

Shadybrook Scotty Daughter and calf in South Alabama,

I have had great success with Scotty 83K! The best bull I bred from him (See www.shorthorn.co.za, herd sire page, D. Tarantino) became a herd sire whom I sold on, after collecting. I have subsequently bred this bull to his maternal sister and kept the resultant male progeny. He was used in my...

CABANA -PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THESE CATTLE ARE-SHORTHORNS HERE NEED THESE GENETICS

In South Africa they are still a part of the Shorthorn Society and unless they are appendix cattle, the British L R Society is very good with marking "tainted" genetics, they are accepted without prejudice into the herdbook. Unfortunately a lot of UK LR's seem to be appendix. Currently there...

CABANA -PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THESE CATTLE ARE-SHORTHORNS HERE NEED THESE GENETICS

This is a very pertinent observation CSI, the same has happened to me! Often the best genetics are right under your nose, bulls don't become better the further they travel to your farm, just as the highest priced female in your herd isn't the best in your herd! You need a paid advisor/consultant...

CABANA -PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THESE CATTLE ARE-SHORTHORNS HERE NEED THESE GENETICS

We were seriously interested in South American genetics and enquired to our import agent about getting them over. Apparently there is a diplomatic spat between South Africa and Argentina/Brazil due to the export of Bonsmara genetics from South Africa and the channels are definitely closed...

    Breeding Sibs

I've just had a look and can confirm that I have a heifer in this family that is 19.33% inbred. She is good, not the best, only second, to her dam's dam's AI calf, I am approaching r.n.reed's and the Canadian's levels here! I have gone completely outcross this year, used two Irish bulls I found...
